KUALA LUMPUR — Sabah recorded a total of 5,455 complaints related to online content between 2023 and May 2026, with online fraud cases topping the list at 1,500, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said today.

The commission expressed concern over cyberbullying and child pornography in the state, Bernama reported.

“In Sandakan district alone, 998 complaints have been received, of which 384 involved online fraud, underscoring the need to further strengthen internet safety awareness,” the statement said.

The announcement coincided with the 2026 Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival held at Dewan Datuk James Ratib in Pekan Botition, Paitan, which drew more than 1,000 attendees. The event aims to educate rural communities on digital safety and cyber risks.

MCMC added that 19 more carnival series will be conducted across the state using an outreach approach. Activities include interactive agency exhibitions, internet safety sharing sessions, family-oriented programmes, and community advocacy initiatives.

Registration for the Wira Internet Selamat (WIS) programme was also opened, encouraging community volunteers to promote safe and responsible internet use in Sabah. — May 16, 2026
