SHAH ALAM – Former Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew took heed of the advice of the Sultan of Selangor and visited Dataran Selangor this morning to, in the words of His Royal Highness, “reflect on the Rukun Negara”.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had personally funded the construction of a Rukun Negara Monument Plaque and visitor benches at Dataran Selangor, located opposite the Selangor state flagpole, as part of efforts to strengthen awareness and appreciation of the national ideology.
The Sultan called on the people, including elected representatives, to visit the plaque twice a month to remind themselves of the principles of the Rukun Negara.
However, The Sultan specifically advised Liu and Seri Kembangan assemblywoman Wong Siew Ki to visit the plaque once a week to remind themselves of the principles of the Rukun Negara, respect the Royal institution, and uphold courtesy and moral values.
Both Liu and Wong have been caught in the crosshairs of the Selangor Palace following their vocal opposition to the banning of pig farming in the state.
Sultan Sharafuddin had in March decreed an end to pig farming in Selangor, citing pollution, unhygienic conditions, and the need to preserve harmony among the various races.
Liu, meanwhile, expressed support for the Sultan of Selangor’s call for politicians to reconnect with the spirit of the Rukun Negara, describing the royal message as a reminder for leaders to return to the core foundations of nation-building.
Liu said he believed the Sultan’s intended message was not simply about physically attending the square, but about the need for politicians to rediscover and understand core national values, including respecting the nation, upholding the Constitution, preserving the rule of law, honouring the institution of the Malay Rulers, and respecting fellow Malaysians.
On his visit today, Liu said he was not only abiding by the advice of the Sultan but also viewed it as a refresher for him as a Malaysian.
“I hope others will also heed the advice of Tuanku and visit the monument to appreciate the Rukun Negara and reflect on its five principles.
“Specifically, I hope the Exco and state assemblymen will also visit the monument, which was generously donated by Tuanku.
“I am also planning to come here next week.”
“The Rukun Negara is the foundation of our nationhood, and as Malaysians, we must abide by its principles,” he told Scoop.
“We tend to forget, and I am happy that it took the Sultan to remind us of the Rukun Negara and how it guides and binds us,” he said, adding that other states should also have similar monuments to remind the rakyat of these guiding national principles.
“I thank Tuanku for this timely reminder and also for his gift of the Rukun Negara plaque to us, his loyal subjects. Daulat Tuanku!” — May 20, 2026
