KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari has assured that issues surrounding national cycling programme technical director John Beasley will be resolved in a comprehensive manner, as the government moves to address concerns that could affect the future of Malaysian cycling.
He said that his ministry was already aware of grievances raised by Beasley, including allegations of political interference, bureaucratic constraints and limitations in grassroots development, and was working with all stakeholders to address them.
The assurance comes amid reports that Beasley may end his tenure earlier than expected, despite his contract running until Jan 31 next year, following growing frustration over several internal issues within the sport’s administration.
Taufiq said the National Sports Council (NSC) held a stakeholder dialogue on June 8 involving the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), state associations, coaches and Beasley himself to seek solutions to the challenges raised.
“The discussion was aimed at reaching a consensus, particularly on athlete selection matters, including issues related to the release of riders by state associations to compete in national-level competitions,” he told reporters after attending the Honor of Kings Asian Games qualifiers today.
He added that further discussions would be held between the NSC, Beasley and the MNCF in the near future to ensure all parties reach common ground.
Taufiq also confirmed that Beasley had given assurances he would continue his duties as normal, at least until the completion of major events on the calendar, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games and 2026 Asian Games.
“Our athletes’ preparations will not be affected and he remains fully committed to leading the team into the major competitions ahead,” he said. – June 16, 2026
