Tragedy at Gurun: two Army personnel die in grenade training blast

Two Royal Malaysian Army personnel died after a grenade explosion during a combat training exercise at Hobart Camp in Gurun, Kedah, prompting an immediate investigation into the incident as military authorities move to determine the cause of the tragedy

KUALA LUMPUR – Two Royal Malaysian Army (TDM) personnel were killed following a grenade explosion during a training exercise at the Hobart Camp shooting range in Gurun, Kedah, earlier today.

TDM confirmed the identities of the victims as Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar from the Sixth Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (6 RAMD) and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip from the First Squadron of the Royal Engineer Regiment (1 RAJD).

Both personnel were involved in a grenade-throwing exercise when the incident occurred at 10.57am, resulting in severe injuries.

They were immediately rushed for treatment to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) in Sungai Petani, but were pronounced dead while en route.

According to TDM, the fatal incident took place during the RAJD Combat Enhancement Training exercise under the Second Malaysian Infantry Division.

“The incident occurred while the victims were undergoing the Royal Engineer Regiment (RAJD) Combat Enhancement Training under the Second Malaysian Infantry Division.”

“The bodies will be sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem examination,” the statement read

Meanwhile, Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Hanyan Ramlan confirmed that authorities received information regarding the incident at 12.30pm.

Following the tragedy, Army Chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman has directed a thorough investigation to be carried out immediately in order to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

He also expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and shared his grief over the loss of two personnel.

“He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of two of his personnel and extended his condolences to both victims’ families, while praying that they remain strong and steadfast in facing the loss of their loved ones,” the statement said.

TDM further assured that all aspects of training safety will continue to be closely monitored, with necessary improvements to be implemented based on the findings of the investigation. – June 16, 2026
