Azam Baki’s NFCC advisory board role not tied to MACC chief post: PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR — The post held by former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki on the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (National Anti-Financial Crime Centre) Advisory Board is not linked to his former role at the anti-graft agency, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid As-Sodiqin in Taman Kobena, Anwar said the appointment was made under the authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and remains effective until 2027.

“The appointment, if I am not mistaken, runs until 2027.

“It can only be revoked by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. His appointment is not tied to the MACC chief commissioner post,” he said.

Earlier, the NFCC clarified that Azam remains a member of its Advisory Board, with his appointment valid until Sept 19, 2027.

In a statement, the agency said Azam was appointed for a three-year term beginning Sept 20, 2024, in a personal capacity with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“The appointment was made in an individual capacity with the consent of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Therefore, his membership in the NFCC Advisory Board is not tied to the position of MACC Chief Commissioner and remains in force until the end of the appointment term, unless terminated earlier by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” the statement said.

The clarification came following questions over Azam’s attendance at an NFCC Advisory Board meeting on June 30. The NFCC said his presence was in accordance with Act 822, as he remains a lawful board member.

“Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Azam Baki’s attendance at the NFCC Advisory Board meeting on June 30 was in accordance with Act 822 as he is a valid member of the NFCC Advisory Board,” it said.

The statement was issued by the Director-General of the National Centre for Financial Crime Prevention under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Azam concluded his 42-year public service career on May 12, 2626, stepping down as MACC chief commissioner after leading the agency through a series of institutional reforms and operational improvements.

A farewell ceremony at MACC headquarters was attended by more than 1,000 senior officers, alongside his wife Puan Sri Normah Mohd Zin and family members, marking the end of his tenure.

Over his career, Azam held several senior roles in the MACC, including director of the Intelligence Division, director of the Investigation Division, and deputy chief commissioner (Operations), before being appointed chief commissioner in March 2020. – July 3, 2026
