Nearly 200,000 pick-up and jeep owners receive higher BUDI Diesel quota

Monthly subsidised diesel allowance raised to 300 litres as government expands support for vehicle users with higher fuel needs

KUALA LUMPUR — Almost 200,000 owners of pick-up trucks and jeep-type diesel vehicles across the country have been approved for an additional 100 litres of subsidised diesel each month under the BUDI MADANI Diesel programme, the Finance Ministry (MOF) said.

In a statement, MOF said the move increases the monthly subsidised diesel allocation from 200 litres to 300 litres, effective this month. The recipients comprise more than 174,000 users in Peninsular Malaysia and over 22,000 in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan as of yesterday, Bernama reported.

“This additional facility is provided taking into account the higher diesel consumption needs among pick-up and jeep owners, including for small and medium business use, as well as travel to rural and remote areas,” it said.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the expanded quota would help users better manage their monthly fuel consumption.

“The government understands that for diesel pick-up and jeep owners, these vehicles are not just for daily commuting, but are also used to earn a living and manage family needs,” he told reporters after observing the programme’s implementation at a petrol station in Kota Kinabalu.

Amir Hamzah said public response to the initiative had been encouraging, with more than 238,000 users benefiting since its rollout in Peninsular Malaysia on June 27, and in Sabah and Sarawak on July 1.

He also noted that a quota-transfer mechanism had been introduced following public feedback, particularly in cases where diesel vehicles are used by immediate family members or where ownership records have yet to be updated. The facility allows the subsidy to be accessed by the actual user of the vehicle rather than solely the registered owner.

For private diesel vehicles used by immediate family members, the registered BUDI Diesel recipient may apply to transfer eligibility via the BUDI MADANI portal, subject to verification and conditions. Alternatively, users may update ownership details through the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

To ease the process, the government has also introduced a three-month exemption on vehicle ownership transfer fees for diesel vehicles starting July 1, 2026.

“This flexibility is given to ensure that those who are genuinely eligible and use the vehicle will benefit from the subsidy,” he said, adding that more than 2,000 transfer applications had already been received through the portal.

Owners of eligible diesel pick-up and jeep vehicles may also apply for the additional quota and eligibility transfer via www.budimadani.gov.my.

Amir Hamzah said more than 336,000 diesel transactions were recorded between June 27 and July 4, involving 12.6 million litres of subsidised diesel and government subsidies totalling over RM23 million.

He said the transactions included diesel purchases priced at RM2.15 per litre during the early access phase, and RM2.10 per litre after full implementation on July 1.

On overall savings from the programme, he said it was still too early to provide precise figures as data collection and verification were ongoing.

However, early feedback from fuel retailers indicated a slight dip in diesel sales volumes, likely due to reduced purchases from non-eligible users.

He expressed confidence that the programme would generate meaningful savings, allowing the government to redirect funds towards assistance initiatives for the public. – July 5, 2026
