KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) decisive victory in the Johor state election indicates that Umno has regained ground among Malay voters while restoring confidence among non-Malay communities, according to political analysts.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) associate professor Dr Mazlan Ali said the outcome demonstrated that Umno had managed to recover from its recent electoral setbacks and re-establish its position among Malay voters.
“The results of tonight’s Johor state election show that Umno has proven that the party has recovered and is back in the support of the Malays,” he told Scoop.
Mazlan said the estimated 20% to 30% shift among non-Malay voters also reflected renewed confidence in BN’s component parties, MCA and MIC.
He attributed BN’s strong showing to several factors, including the transfer of Perikatan Nasional (PN) support following PAS’ directive for its supporters to back the coalition, the effectiveness of BN’s campaign machinery and its advantage as the incumbent state government.
“Early indications of BN’s big win were due to the shift in PN votes where PAS instructed its supporters to vote for BN.
In addition, the success of BN’s well-organized and well-strategized campaign also contributed to this victory,” he added.
Mazlan said the Johor result would provide BN with renewed momentum ahead of the upcoming Negeri Sembilan and Melaka state elections, while influencing the coalition’s approach to political cooperation and preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16).
Meanwhile, senior political analyst and geostrategist Dr Azmi Hassan said BN’s performance in Johor had surpassed expectations.
However, he said the result also raised key political questions, particularly over the impact of PAS’ support for BN and whether such cooperation could shape future alliances, especially in Negeri Sembilan.
“How PAS helped BN will determine not the colour of the state government, but whether Umno will cooperate with PAS,” he said.
Azmi also said Bersatu’s performance should not be assessed merely based on the number of seats it secured, but also on whether the party succeeded in pulling votes away from Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates.
Looking ahead, he said BN’s Johor victory could strengthen the coalition’s position in the coming state elections.
“If Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka prove that Barisan Nasional is still in the mix of the political scenario, then it will be added pressure for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to call an early general election,” he said.
Azmi added that BN’s confidence in Johor was likely among the reasons behind the early dissolution of the state assembly, as the coalition sought to capitalise on its momentum for future electoral battles.
Earlier, BN pledged to deliver on its election promises after securing victory in Johor, with coalition chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressing appreciation to voters and party members for providing the mandate.
Zahid said BN’s immediate focus would be on implementing commitments outlined in its election manifesto under the leadership of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
At a press conference, the Umno president thanked voters for their support while also recognising the contributions of BN’s election machinery, component parties, volunteers, non-governmental organisations and individuals who played a role in securing the coalition’s victory. – July 12, 2026
