‘World has not ended’: Hassan Karim tells PKR to regroup, not panic over GE16

Veteran lawmaker says Madani govt should not rush into polls, party must remain resilient and prepare strategically for next national polls

KUALA LUMPUR — Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has called on the Madani Government to serve out its full term instead of rushing to call the 16th General Election (GE16), saying more time is needed for its policies to bear fruit.

The PKR lawmaker said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should not hastily dissolve Parliament merely based on the party’s performance in several recent state elections, Bernama reported.

In a Facebook post today titled “DON’T CRY PKR, Dunia Belum Kiamat” (Don’t Cry PKR, The World Has Not Ended), Hassan said PKR should take stock of the election outcomes and review its strategy ahead of GE16.

“Take a rest PKR, after working hard during the campaign. We can then carefully plan a good strategy for GE16,” he said.

“Convince our leader Anwar Ibrahim not to act hastily. Encourage him to govern the country well until the full mandate ends, which is by the end of 2027 or early 2028,” he said.

Hassan said allowing the government to complete its mandate would provide sufficient time for its economic policies to produce tangible outcomes and enable the public to assess their impact.

He warned that an early GE16 could be driven by political sentiment following PKR’s setbacks in Sabah, Johor and Negeri Sembilan, potentially affecting the party’s and Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) electoral prospects.

Instead, Hassan said the next 12 to 18 months should be focused on strengthening the economy, attracting more foreign direct investment (FDI), and rebuilding public confidence in the government’s performance.

He added that Parliament’s dissolution should only be considered once Malaysians begin to experience the benefits of the government’s economic initiatives and see clearer signs of economic improvement.

Hassan also urged PKR members and supporters not to lose confidence following the recent election results, but to continue preparing for GE16.

“So, do not cry PKR. You are a reform party. We are fighters. We are brave enough to fight, brave enough to win and brave enough to face defeat,” he said. – August 2, 2026
