Selangor declares Sept 1 as special holiday to celebrate Sukma 2026 victory

The Selangor contingent recorded a total of 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, surpassing its previous best performance when it first hosted the Games 28 years ago, as well as exceeding its target of 80 gold medals

SHAH ALAM – The Selangor government has declared Sept 1 as a special holiday to commemorate the state contingent’s success in winning the overall title at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), held in Selangor.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the decision at the Games’ closing ceremony at Aneka Walk, SA Sentral, adding that it was a token of appreciation from the state government to the entire Selangor contingent for bringing honour to the state.

“For the Selangor athletes, our children representing the Red and Yellow team, after 468 sporting events were contested, you successfully won 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals.

“As the Selangor Menteri Besar, I am delighted with this remarkable performance. As a token of appreciation to every athlete and the 10,000 volunteers who contributed throughout the Games, I am pleased to announce that the Selangor state government has declared a special holiday to celebrate the SUKMA 2026 victory, which will fall on Sept 1, 2026, next Tuesday,” he said in the presence of Raja Muda of SelangorTengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, and 22nd SUKMA and Para SUKMA Organising Committee chairman, Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said the achievement also reflected the commitment and hard work of Selangor’s athletes, coaches and contingent officials in ensuring the state’s target at SUKMA 2026 was achieved.

Amirudin also expressed his appreciation to all parties who supported the Selangor contingent throughout the Games.

“To everyone who has been with us since day one, I thank you for placing your trust in Selangor as the host of the 22nd SUKMA and Para SUKMA Games 2026.

“To the coaches and contingent heads, congratulations on your efforts to nurture talent and identify new athletes,” he said.

The Selangor contingent recorded a total of 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, surpassing its previous best performance when it first hosted the Games 28 years ago, as well as exceeding its target of 80 gold medals.

This marks Selangor’s 10th overall SUKMA title, following victories in 1988, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2013 and, most recently, in 2016 in Sarawak. – August 25, 2026
