KUALA LUMPUR – The government has agreed to restore the basic monthly Budi95 eligibility from 200 litres to 300 litres, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.
The move means that more than 16 million consumers will be eligible to purchase up to 300 litres of subsidised RON95 petrol each month.
More than half a million owners of diesel-powered pickup trucks and jeeps, meanwhile, will be entitled to subsidised diesel of up to 400 litres a month.
Speaking at the Prime Minister’s National Day Address, Anwar also announced that the allocation for the maintenance of all types of schools next year would be increased by 50 per cent, from RM1 billion to RM1.5 billion.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the restoration of the basic eligibility for BUDI95 and BUDI Diesel would take effect on Sept 1 as part of efforts to ease the people’s cost of living.
“There are concerns about the fate of the M40… (with some) saying that we continue to place emphasis on the B40. It is indeed difficult because this MADANI Government must look after everyone,” said the Prime Minister.
He said petrol and diesel subsidies were among the forms of assistance that benefited almost all groups, including the M40 and T20, with the cost borne by the government reaching RM40 billion.
Anwar said the decision to restore the basic eligibility for BUDI95 and BUDI Diesel was made after taking into account cost-of-living pressures, without waiting for the tabling of Budget 2027.
“Cost-of-living pressures cannot wait until October; businesses need to grow now and cannot wait until October,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the government acknowledged that the measures implemented so far were still insufficient to fully alleviate the hardship faced by the people as a result of rising living costs, and that continued action was therefore necessary.
“The country’s economic growth must be returned to the people,” Anwar said. – August 30, 2026
