KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a special meeting tomorrow to look into measures to cushion the impact of higher electricity bills on affected households.
Anwar said the meeting would involve the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), Energy Commission (ST), Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and the Finance Ministry (MOF).
He said his attention remained focused on public concerns over the increase in electricity bills after returning from India and the Maldives.
“Since returning from India and Maldives, my attention has remained focused on the concerns of the people regarding the increase in electricity bills in recent times. I have heard the grievances expressed and this matter needs to be given attention and addressed immediately,” he said in a statement today.
Anwar stressed that the government would continue with its targeted subsidy approach, which he said was intended to protect the majority of Malaysians.
“Approximately 80 per cent of domestic consumers who use no more than 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month remain protected and are not affected by the increase in rates following the rise in fuel costs this year,” he said.
However, he said haze and hotter weather in recent weeks had contributed to higher electricity consumption among some households.
This had resulted in their monthly usage exceeding the 600kWh threshold, making them subject to the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) mechanism.
“Therefore, the MADANI Government will hold a special meeting tomorrow with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Energy Commission (ST), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Ministry of Finance (MOF) to examine immediate mitigation measures to reduce the impact of the increase in electricity bills on the households concerned,” Anwar said.
He added that the government would continue to ensure that targeted subsidy measures were implemented fairly and reasonably, with the interests and wellbeing of the people remaining its priority.
