PUTRAJAYA — Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali was laid to rest at Pusara Negara (National Cemetery) here at 6.36pm today.
Her body was placed in the ground after being brought from Masjid As-Syarif in Seri Kembangan, Selangor where funeral prayers were recited and where the public paid their last respects.
The wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) this morning at age 100, was accorded the honours of a state funeral.
Dr Siti Hasmah’s body was laid to rest next to the grave of Tun Endon Mahmood, the first wife of the late former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Putra Mosque Grand Imam Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali recited the talqin, followed by a recounting of Dr Siti Hasmah’s services and contributions to the country, particularly in healthcare, education and community welfare.
The Jalur Gemilang which had draped Dr Siti Hasmah’s coffin, was then presented to Dr Mahathir.
Earlier at Masjid As-Syarif, thousands of people paid their last respects and performed funeral prayers for Dr Siti Hasmah.
The prayers were held twice to accommodate the large crowd, with congregants extending beyond the mosque’s main prayer hall, Bernama reports.
Among those who performed the funeral prayers were Dr Mahathir, family members, Cabinet ministers, alongside Members of Parliament, corporate figures, and members of the public.
Also joining the prayers were two other former Prime Ministers—Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The mosque’s main hall was so packed that some congregants formed prayer rows outside the building in order to participate in the prayers.
Earlier, members of the public had gathered at the mosque grounds as early as midday to wait their turn to pay their final respects to Dr Siti Hasmah.
They included representatives from foreign missions and the non-Muslim community, including tycoons Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were also present to pay their final respects to Dr Siti Hasmah.
Anwar was also seen shaking hands and having a brief conversation with Dr Mahathir. – September 28, 2026
