KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is seeking further information from artificial intelligence company Anthropic over allegations that its AI technology was used in a foreign-linked operation to manipulate political influence targeting Malaysian users.

In a parliamentary reply to Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin question on how far the government was aware of and monitoring the use of AI to manipulate Malaysian voters, as highlighted in a report by Anthropic, and what action had been taken, the Communications Ministry said the government viewed the report seriously and would determine appropriate follow-up action once sufficient information and evidence had been obtained.

According to the ministry, Anthropic alleged that its Claude AI technology had been used by a foreign entity to develop several components of the operation, including targeting systems, networks of fake social media accounts and fake news websites.

Anthropic also alleged that the operation was linked to BBS Bilisim Teknolojileri, a technology company based in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The ministry said Anthropic had reported terminating the identified Claude accounts and implementing mitigation measures.

“In this regard, MCMC is seeking further information and clarification from Anthropic regarding the report.”

“This step is important to ensure that any assessment and follow-up action is based on sufficient information and evidence,” it said.

The ministry added that MCMC would determine appropriate action based on the information and evidence obtained, within its jurisdiction and under relevant laws.

This could include cooperation with enforcement agencies, security agencies, digital platform providers and other relevant parties, if necessary.

It said any regulatory or enforcement action would be carried out under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Online Safety Act 2025 and other applicable legislation within MCMC’s jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the Digital Ministry is drafting an AI Governance Bill to strengthen the country’s regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, including accountability, risk management and the responsibilities of parties developing and implementing AI systems.

The government said it would continue strengthening its monitoring of potential AI misuse and cooperation with technology providers, digital platforms and relevant agencies.

“These efforts are aimed at addressing online harm and ensuring that the country’s digital environment remains safe, transparent and trusted,” the ministry added. – October 14, 2026
