16 years of Little India, Brickfields: A glorious past and an enduring legacy – M. Saravanan

AS the radiant lights of Deepavali brighten our streets, we honor a remarkable milestone in Malaysia’s cultural landscape: 16 magnificent years of Little India, Brickfields.

Looking back fills me with profound pride. Serving as Deputy Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing during its conceptualization, I recall the countless days and nights spent meticulously planning every detail to ensure this redevelopment authentically reflected our heritage and served the nation.

The flourishing reality of Little India today stands as a living testament to visionary leadership, steadfast advocacy, and a deep commitment to preserving our identity.

October 27, 2010, remains unforgettable. On that landmark day, I had the honor of standing alongside former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh as we officially presented Little India, Brickfields to the world.

The two phase transformation along Jalan Tun Sambanthan did far more than upgrade a 19th century enclave into a premier cultural destination linked with KL Sentral. What we inaugurated in 2010 was more than an urban rejuvenation or commercial project.

It was a solemn pledge to honor past generations and inspire future ones—a promise that the sacrifices, hard work, and vibrant spirit of the Malaysian Indian community are permanently woven into the nation’s history.

Today, Indian entrepreneurs keep this heritage vibrant through bustling jewelry stores, aromatic spice bazaars, exquisite silk shops, and authentic culinary traditions that bring history to life daily.

Long before it became a bustling cultural center, the area was known as Batu Limabelas (15th Mile). Following the devastating fire and flood of 1881 in Kuala Lumpur, Kapitan China Yap Ah Loy set up a large-scale brickworks here, laying the literal foundations of the capital and giving Brickfields its iconic name.

By the early 20th century, Brickfields had evolved into the heart of the Malayan Railway (KTM). Pioneer workers from South India and Sri Lanka moved here to construct the railway tracks and public infrastructure, bringing with them a strong work ethic and deep spiritual devotion that still define the community.

Brickfields also stands as an enduring model of Malaysian unity and religious harmony. Within a short walking distance, visitors encounter a remarkable sanctuary of faiths:

The historic Vivekananda Ashram (established in 1904)

The century-old Sri Kandaswamy Temple

The Buddhist Maha Vihara

The Sam Kow Tong Temple

St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church

The Holy Fathima Church

Stepping into Little India is a captivating sensory experience from the resonant rhythms of traditional music and majestic purple-and-gold arches to vibrant silk sarees and the mouthwatering scent of banana leaf rice.

Little India is far more than a chapter in Malaysia’s history. It is a vital, brilliant heart of our shared identity. It is where our elders find warmth in nostalgia, our youth discover cultural roots, and every visitor experiences true Malaysian hospitality.

Let us reaffirm our pledge to cherish our origins, empower our communities, and safeguard historic treasures like Little India so they continue to inspire generations to come. – October 26, 2026
