GEORGE TOWN – Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has announced today that it has appointed MMSB Consult Sdn Bhd as the Independent Consultant Engineer (ICE) for the Mutiara Line light rail transit (LRT) project.
In a statement, MRT Corp said that the appointment of the firm as the ICE was made through an open tender process, followed by a comprehensive evaluation process.
“The scope of (ICE’s) work includes a thorough review of the design, construction, testing and commissioning, and operation and maintenance phases, ensuring adherence to all relevant project requirements, standards and regulations,” said the public transport company in the statement.
“This appointment reflects the Mutiara Line’s growing momentum as the project transitions from preparatory stages into construction readiness.”
Earlier today, Scoop reported MRT Corp as saying that it has granted the notice to proceed (NTP) to SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd for the project’s first civil works package. MRT Corp said SRS had fulfilled the post-award conditions of its contract, which came into effect in June 2025.
With the issuance of the NTP, the six-year timeline for the project has officially kicked off.
“The project remains on track for advance works to commence in August 2025, with key activities such as utility relocation, piling works, and site establishment. Looking ahead, large-scale civil construction is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of 2026,” added MRT Corp. – July 17, 2025
