KUALA LUMPUR – Canadian technology firm BlackBerry has expanded its Asia Pacific regional headquarters in Malaysia, deepening partnerships on cybersecurity and secure communications while strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s role as a hub for the sector.

The announcement was marked at a ceremony on September 26 at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and BlackBerry Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence (CCoE) in Cyberjaya, following last week’s Asean Economic Ministers’ meetings.

The event was attended by Canada’s Parliamentary Secretary of Trade, Yasir Naqvi, and Canada’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Jodi Robinson, who joined Malaysian officials in celebrating BlackBerry’s growing footprint in the country.

The expansion includes a new sales and marketing headquarters at Q Sentral, a fully operational 24/7 Support Centre in Mont Kiara, and upgrades to the CCoE training facility in Cyberjaya.

The Cyberjaya facility, already offering more than 55 courses, will soon feature new lab infrastructure, interactive kiosks, a cyber war room, and a Security Operations Centre simulator to provide hands-on training for cyber-defenders.

“As Malaysia continues to grow as a trusted hub for cybersecurity and secure communications, we are pleased to see Canadian companies like BlackBerry invest, grow and thrive here and deepen Canada’s support for the government of Malaysia,” said Naqvi in a statement.

He added that the partnership reflected Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, enhancing cyber resilience, innovation, and capacity-building across Malaysia and Asean.

The sentiment was echoed by MCMC, which welcomed BlackBerry’s expansion as a catalyst for closer collaboration between regulators and the private sector.

BlackBerry’s announcement follows Canada’s pledge of C$3.9 million (RM13.5 million) last year for multi-year cybersecurity training at the Cyberjaya facility.

“BlackBerry is a proud Canadian company, and we are excited to celebrate our continued expansion and growth in Malaysia,” said Tash Stamatelos, BlackBerry’s senior vice president for APAC.

He added that the company was committed to supporting Malaysia in tackling complex risks, from espionage and cyberattacks to disaster response, while upskilling the national cyber workforce. — September 30, 2025
