Photo of the day: Silent stories of refugees touch young hearts

8:18 PM MYT

CHILDREN look at photographs capturing the struggles and challenges of refugees during the launch of the Refugee Festival 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall today.

The festival features a photo exhibition and numerous programmes to spread awareness about refugees in Malaysia.

According to the National Human Rights Society, there are nearly 190,000 refugees in Malaysia as of May 2024, including asylum seekers registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention but as a United Nations member, it is obliged to protect refugees and asylum seekers in accordance with international human rights obligations. – June 21, 2024
