MetMalaysia on alert: heavy downpours expected during northeast monsoon season

KUALA LUMPUR – The Meteorological Department has predicted four to six episodes of heavy rain amid the northeast monsoon that will take place between November 11 and March 2024.

According to predictions, heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, and the west of Sarawak from November to January.

“Continuous heavy rain over several days can result in flooding in low-lying areas and flood-prone areas. If continuous heavy rain occurs simultaneously with high tides and storm surges, the risk of flooding becomes more extreme. 

“In addition, continuous and strong northeasterly winds can cause rough seas, rising sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea,” said the department in a statement today.

In February and March, it is expected that the north of the peninsula (Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, and Terengganu), Sabah, Labuan, and the north of Sarawak will experience less rain.

The hot and dry weather is expected to start in March 2024, with the possibility of heat waves. 

“This follows the El Nino phenomenon, which is expected to continue until the middle of 2024, and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is expected until the first quarter of 2024,” it added.

A positive IOD means the western side of the Indian Ocean, near the Somali coast, becomes warmer than the eastern Indian Ocean. – November 7, 2023
