KUALA LUMPUR – A customer has taken to Facebook to highlight a “ludicrous” Chinese eatery in Melaka that allegedly charged him 30 sen for an empty bowl he requested.

A Facebook user known as Ronnie Goh said he had asked for an extra bowl for his son to share a plate of wan tan noodles, but the restaurant charged him 30 sen for it.

“For all those who come to this shop near Bukit Cina Melaka… THEY WILL CHARGE YOU RM0.30 for an empty bowl! I asked for an extra bowl for my little son to share my wan tan mee. They charged RM0.30. Crazy la,” he said in his post on Thursday.

The restaurant is known for its wan tan noodles and is frequented by locals and visitors in Melaka.

However, the restaurant’s price list written in Chinese displayed on its wall listed that a request for an empty bowl would cost 30 sen for adults and free for children.

Goh’s post has been shared 90 times at the point of writing, with netizens having mixed reactions in the comment section.

Many said it does not make sense for the restaurant to charge for an empty bowl and that they would avoid going to the restaurant.

Several users, however, felt that since the restaurant has a price list displayed,  it is up to customers to decide for themselves.

“If a group of adults go into the shop and share only a bowl of noodles, how is the owner going to earn money?” said one of the users.

Another user suggested that Goh could bring his own bowl “to solve the problem” while someone pointed out that they were not charged for making the same request.

Scoop is trying to reach out to the restaurant for a comment. – November 11, 2023
