SHAH ALAM – Bersatu members are expressing jubilation over Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to defend his party presidency, considering him the backbone of the party.
Bersatu supreme council member, Mohd Rafiq Mohd Abdullah, affirmed the party’s commitment to rejecting Muhyiddin’s initial decision not to defend the post.
“We are resolute in our decision. Muhyiddin is a leader who has taught us valuable lessons, such as navigating tough times, leading with integrity and prioritising the people. He also warned us against complacency and betrayal by the greedy,” he said.
When questioned about the party’s future, Rafiq expressed optimism, noting that the party is gaining strength with substantial support from the people.
Pinggiran USJ Shah Alam division chief Shahrul Amin Daud, a pioneer party member, noted the potential for disunity within the party if Muhyiddin were not at the helm.
“With Tan Sri still in good health, we want to avoid any party disunity. He is the pioneer, and if he doesn’t run for the party’s election, it may lead to division,” he told Scoop during Bersatu’s annual general assembly today.
Shahrul highlighted how the party expanded under Muhyiddin’s leadership when he succeeded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Bersatu’s president.
He credited Muhyiddin’s Islamic background for making a coalition with PAS feasible.
“PAS can easily accept Bersatu because of his Islamic background, strengthening the coalition,” he said.
“Both parties need each other to form a robust coalition.”
Siti Hajar Karim, from the party’s women’s wing, echoed this sentiment, foreseeing a bright future for the party.
“We have witnessed a significant increase in Bersatu’s numbers, indicating a promising future and growth as a formidable party,” she said.
Having been a member for four years, Siti Hajar hoped that Muhyiddin would continue as president not only for this term.
“Alhamdulillah, it is something we genuinely hope for ‘Abah’ to remain the president indefinitely. The majority of us still stand by and support him to become the next prime minister,” she expressed.
Earlier today, Muhyiddin – who is Pagoh MP – made an about-turn on his recent decision to sit out a re-election, opting to run for the party’s presidency during its upcoming selection next year. – November 25, 2023
