GOMBAK – A foreigner shot dead by police early this morning is suspected to be the mastermind behind a Rohingya gang with about 50 reported criminal cases nationwide stretching over the past decade.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the man in his 30s, who was one of the three foreigners shot dead, is believed to be the leader of the gang known as ‘Rantau Fiesta’.

“The gang consisting of about three to four people has been involved in criminal cases such as home burglaries since 2011,” Hussein told a press conference at the Gombak district police headquarters today.

“One of the deceased individuals has a criminal record and was imprisoned twice, once in 2016 and again in 2017, for burglary.

“He is believed to be (the gang’s) mastermind as once he was released from prison, the gang became active again.”

According to Hussein, the gang’s criminal activities have been detected in six states – Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang.

“In this year itself, 27 cases involving the gang were reported in Selangor, with losses amounting to RM1.3 million. The latest case in Selangor was in Batang Kali on December 8 where three Rolex watches worth RM400,000 were stolen.

“Previously, on November 9, there was a case in Hulu Selangor involving RM50,000 in stolen valuables as well as another case on November 5 with RM23,000 reported losses.”

On police operations late last night leading up to the shootout, Hussein said two teams of eight police officers had been conducting their crime prevention rounds in Selayang Jaya.

However, officers faced resistance from the three “suspicious” individuals, who were in a Ford Fiesta car.

“They (three foreigners) acted aggressively and fired three shots towards the police officers. After a round of exchanged gunshots where police fired seven shots, the three individuals were found covered in blood and dead due to gunshot wounds.

“Police found two revolvers and a parang in the car. We believe that they were planning a robbery in the Batu Caves or Selayang area, which is where they resided.”

Noting that two out of the three individuals were found with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee cards, he said the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. – December 23, 2023
