KUALA LUMPUR – 23 people died in road accidents yesterday as more motorists made the journey to their hometowns for Aidilfitri celebrations this week.
A total of 2,156 road accidents were also recorded yesterday, the police’s Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department said on Facebook.
The number of fatalities yesterday almost matched the total for April 5 – the first day of the Aidilfitri exodus – when 25 were killed in road deaths and 2,185 accidents were recorded.
Aidilfitri is expected to fall on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
After the exodus yesterday, traffic this morning on most major highways nationwide was reported to be smoother, according to the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM).
The KL-Karak Expressway saw some congestion, while Smartlanes on various stretches of the North-South Expressway were activated to increase lane capacity and keep traffic flowing.
Police advised road users to keep updated with traffic flow information and to avoid logjam by using alternative routes.
Plus Malaysia Bhd has said some 2.1 million vehicles per day are estimated to use the major north-south highway in the days preceding Aidilfitri and after, compared to the usual 1.82 million during normal peak hours. – April 7, 2024
