KUALA LUMPUR – Seven police officers and personnel, including a senior official with the rank of assistant commissioner (ACP), remanded over the RM1.25 million cyrpto extortion case, have now been detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
The others remanded include a deputy superintendent and two inspectors, one each with the rank of Sergeant and Lance Corporal.
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said these individuals, aged between 32 and 50, have been remanded under Section 4(5) of Sosma for a duration of 28 days, until June 5.
“The intelligence gathered throughout the investigation indicated that this group was perpetrating this serious crime, motivated by the pursuit of financial gains, an offence under Section 130U of the Penal Code.”
Razarudin also said that at 10pm last night, another 34-year-old police officer with the rank of inspector surrendered at the D14 division and was subsequently arrested under Section 4(1) of Sosma.
On May 3, Razarudin said three officers from the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department, holding the ranks of ACP, deputy superintendent, and inspector, were arrested near Jalan Tun Razak in connection with an extortion case.
Their arrests followed a police report filed the night before. After that, an inspector and a sergeant were also detained.
Following the arrest of the five individuals, police subsequently apprehended another lance corporal who served in the same department.
The investigation is being conducted by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit, Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), and Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Unit under Section 384 of the Penal Code.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any two of these punishments. – May 10, 2024
