Lucky break for two trapped men after fallen tree crushed their cars in Alor Star

Duo did not sustain injuries after public rescued them from this afternoon’s incident, Fire Dept reports no traffic obstruction

KUALA LUMPUR – Two men are trapped after their cars were crushed by a fallen tree at Jalan Datuk Kumbar in Alor Star, Kedah today.

With help from the public, the duo, aged 38 and 61, were rescued from their cars and did not sustain any injuries.

Alor Star Fire and Rescue Department deputy chief Ahmad Naufal Abdullah said an emergency call was made at 3.43pm and a team reached the location in eight minutes.

He added that the uprooted tree did not obstruct traffic and the rescue operation ended by 5.04pm.

Recently, there have been several cases of fallen trees in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

This has prompted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to order Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to plant a hundred new trees for every one cut down.

Along with his comment, Anwar posted a news report on Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa’s orders to DBKL to cut down all high-risk trees in the capital, following the uprooting of several trees in two storms.

The storm on May 7 uprooted a more than 50-year-old tree on Jalan Sultan Ismail, killing a man and injuring another person.

Zaliha’s order to DBKL came after a second storm on May 13 which felled another old tree on Jalan Pinang. The incident damaged several cars and motorcycles.

The same storm also saw other trees being uprooted and toppled in other parts of the city. – May 16, 2024
