RM2.4 mil allocated to upgrade pipelines in rural Sabah for better water supply: Zahid

DPM also urges better collaboration between federal and state govt to resolve issue

KOTA KINABALU – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that RM2.4 million was allocated last month to improve rural Sabah’s water supply pipelines.

The rural and regional development minister said the federal government is also open to increasing the allocation if needed, proving its commitment to solving the issue.

Zahid, however, also urges for better cooperation between the state and federal government to ensure Sabah’s water supply is stable and accessible to everyone there.

“If we (federal government) improve the pipelines, but the supply is insufficient, it is (still) impossible for users to receive water.

“So (the federal and Sabah governments) must align,” said the Umno president after officiating the Sepanggar Umno meeting here today. 

Aside from rural Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Sabah students in Kota Kinabalu have also recently conveyed their woes with the water supply through a peaceful demonstration.

The rally, joined by around 50 people, was held in front of the Sabah’s Chief Minister’s Office where participants marched for 5km to hand a memorandum to demand resolution to their issues to the Datuk Hajiji Mohd Noor himself.

However, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya came to meet the group instead, telling them that he represented Hajiji to receive the memorandum.

The protesters then refused to submit the memorandum, insisting for Hajiji to receive it. – June 22, 2024
