KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bullion worth RM7 million and RM170 million in cash across various currencies from premises linked to four senior officers of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a statement, MACC said the assets were recovered during searches conducted at their residences and three other locations believed to be ‘safehouses’.

“As a result of these operations, MACC has seized approximately RM170 million in cash in multiple international currencies (Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc, and Yuan) as well as 16kg of pure gold bullion valued at nearly RM7 million,” the statement read.

Additionally, MACC revealed that Ismail Sabri was instructed to declare his assets under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009 on December 11 2024, with the official declaration made on February 10 this year.

“MACC is currently investigating a corruption and money laundering case involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“The investigation focuses on expenditures and fund procurement for promotional and publicity purposes during his tenure as prime minister.

“The probe is being conducted under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001,” it added.

MACC also confirmed that Ismail Sabri provided his statement to investigators on February 19 and did not rule out summoning him again for further questioning.

“Around 10 witnesses have been identified and will be called in soon to assist in the investigation,” it added.

The commission emphasised that the investigation is being carried out independently, professionally, and in full compliance with the law.

“MACC is committed to ensuring that any misconduct related to corruption and money laundering is dealt with firmly in the interest of the nation,” the statement read. — March 2, 2025
