KUALA LUMPUR – The candidate for the new ambassador to the United States has been approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed.
Anwar said an announcement will be made soon.
“The ambassadorial candidate for the US will be announced shortly, very soon. The decision has been made. The King has given his approval.
“We will announce it. It will follow the process. If you can, please be patient for a day or two,” he told reporters after Friday prayers at the Prima Saujana Mosque here today.
The new appointment will replace Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who completed his two-year term as ambassador.
On February 24 , Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the new Malaysian ambassador to the US would be a career diplomat, not a politician as in previous appointments.
“The candidate is someone with extensive experience in diplomacy and multilateral negotiations.
Nazri was among the politicians appointed as ambassadors in recent years, including Tan Sri Jamaluddin Jarjis, Datuk Seri Awang Adek Hussin and Tan Sri Zulhasnam Rafique, all from Umno.
Malaysia’s first ambassador to the US was Tun Dr Ismail. Other politicians who served in this role include the late Tun Omar Ong Yoke Lin, the late Tan Sri Mohamed Khir Johari and MCA veteran Datuk Lew Sip Hon. – April 4, 2025
