MELAKA — A teenage girl with learning disabilities is feared to be in danger after a witness saw her willingly get into a stranger’s silver Perodua Kelisa near her local playground in Taman Rambai Idaman yesterday afternoon.
Melaka Tengah district police chief ACP Christopher Patit said 18-year-old Nurin Wardina Hairi was reported missing by her 47-year-old mother at 9.38pm, after realising her daughter had not returned home by 5.30pm.
“The mother had seen her daughter leaving the house at 3pm to play at a nearby playground after choosing not to follow her to send her sister to work at Tanjung Minyak,” he said in a statement today.
“After she arrived home, she saw her daughter was not at home and asked her husband to check the playground but she was missing… then she asked the help of residents there to look for their daughter.”
Christopher said a resident in the area had witnessed the girl getting into the car willingly, with no signs of distress, which led them to believe the car belonged to someone she knew — possibly a relative.
The girl’s mother recalled seeing the same car parked nearby earlier in the day, behaving suspiciously. However, she had assumed it was owned by a guest staying at the homestay next door.
The girl’s mother also told police that Nurin is non-verbal, can only understand simple words, and typically avoids people.
She added that her daughter has no close friends and would routinely go to the playground alone, always returning on time.
Nurin is described as 145 cm tall, thin, with shoulder-length hair. She was last seen wearing a green t-shirt and black trousers.
Christopher said police had obtained CCTV footage of the Kelisa’s movements and were working to identify the vehicle’s owner. — April 6, 2025
