PUTRAJAYA — Students affected by the fire at a dormitory block at SMK Tinggi Setapak last night will be relocated and attend classes online, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said.

“I managed to visit this morning and saw the total damage of the fire” she said, adding that the dorm housed 96 students, many of whom depend on boarding due to travel challenges.

“We have identified a new place for immediate relocation while repairs take place,” she told reporters today after attending the MoE-MSSM-Milo Sports Awards here today.

She also said the Federal Territories Education Department is to take full responsibility and provide immediate assistance to the students and teachers.

“For now, school textbooks and other necessities have been provided to students.

“For many of them, they are studying online while awaiting relocation, though some parents have committed to sending their children to school,” she added.

Yayasan Guru Tun Hussein Onn (YGTHO) is also assisting teachers and warders who experienced total losses in the fire.

The blaze last night broke out while all students were in the school’s surau for Isyak prayers.

It engulfed the first floor of the dorm and was brought under control by 9.40pm. Nobody was reported injured, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. – April 29, 2025
