KUALA LUMPUR – PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has acknowledged mounting calls for her to contest the party’s deputy presidency, saying she will make a decision that safeguards party unity and advances its reform agenda.
The former Permatang Pauh MP said she appreciates the sentiments expressed by grassroots members urging her to vie for the position currently held by Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who has confirmed his intention to defend the post in the party’s leadership elections later this month.
In a statement, Nurul Izzah said any decision must reflect the party’s need for cohesion and revitalisation.
“I will give (my) best decision that will balance unity, friendship ties, changes as well as meaningful reforms for all (party) members,” she said.
“We make decisions not for any individual, but for building a future for Keadilan together during good times and bad times.”
She stressed that PKR was entering a critical phase and that leadership choices should be guided by a vision to “bring fresh breath and meaningful changes” that preserve the party’s relevance and public trust.
Nurul Izzah’s remarks follow growing support from within the party, including endorsements from several state and divisional leaders, ahead of the PKR central elections scheduled for May 22 to 24.
Among those backing her is Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek, who said that Nurul Izzah’s potential candidacy aligns with the grassroots’ hopes for change rooted in stability and loyalty to the party.
“Making Nurul Izzah as the deputy president is also a reflection of Keadilan’s determination to strengthen itself, as well as uplifting young and women leaders as part of the agenda of rejuvenating national politics,” said Fadhlina.
PKR Youth chief Adam Adli also voiced support, describing Nurul Izzah as a principled and steadfast figure with the ability to inspire a new generation with the “Reformasi” spirit.
“This party is being prepared to brace new eras and challenges, and (having) Nurul Izzah at the frontline is a sign of our commitment to the continuity of the ‘reformasi’ idealism, which goes beyond individuals or family names.
“Nurul Izzah is part of Keadilan’s long history, and she is also the future for the party,” he added. – May 7, 2025.
