KUALA LUMPUR — Following Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz’s announcement to resign from Umno and join PKR, Umno has responded by stating that it has yet to receive his official resignation letter.
In a statement released today, Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki expressed serious concerns about Tengku Zafrul’s intention to resign and join PKR.
“It is highly inappropriate for any party within the Unity Government to accept members from other parties without restrictions,” read the statement.
Asyraf warned that such moves could disrupt harmony among coalition parties and fuel mistrust and suspicion regarding the solidarity, sincerity, and honesty of grassroots members.
Earlier, Tengku Zafrul announced on Facebook that he is resigning from Umno and plans to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
He confirmed that he has submitted his resignation letter to Umno’s leadership, relinquishing his positions as a member of the Umno Supreme Council, Chief of the Umno Kota Raja Division, and general party membership.
The investment, trade, and industry minister, who has been a member of Umno since 1997, described his decision as challenging and the result of thorough consideration.
He said he consulted with trusted colleagues inside and outside the party, including the party president, before making his final decision.
“I have taken considerable time to think deeply about this decision, particularly given that Umno is the only political party I have been a member of since 1997,” Tengku Zafrul said in his statement.
He also thanked his Umno colleagues, supporters, and members who have stood by him throughout his political journey.
“Your contributions can never be fully repaid and will be remembered by me forever. Thank you.”
With his resignation, Tengku Zafrul informed PKR’s president and secretary-general of his desire to join the party and plans to follow the standard membership application procedure.
This decision marks a notable shift in the political landscape, as Tengku Zafrul has held significant government roles within the Barisan Nasional coalition, led by Umno, for an extended period. — May 30, 2025
