Attack targeted market security guards and vendor; shooter’s motive believed to be personal

KUALA LUMPUR – A lone gunman killed six people at the Or Tor Kor market in Chatuchak district, Bangkok, on Monday, before fatally shooting himself.

The shooting unfolded around 12.38pm, with authorities identifying the attacker as a 61-year-old man from Khong district, Nakhon Ratchasima.

The gunman, dressed in a black T-shirt and camouflage shorts, was found dead at the scene on a bench inside the market building, his body lying next to a rucksack.

Police recovered identification cards confirming his name, local media reported.

Among the deceased were four market security guards and a female vendor. Two other women were injured and transported to Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital, but one later died despite efforts to resuscitate her.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the gunman running back towards them as they came across the bodies of the security guards lying on the road within the market compound.

The shooting took place near a donation collection point for those affected by the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, but authorities have ruled out any connection to this.

Social media activist Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet, also known as “Gun Jompalang,” reported that the shooter specifically targeted the donation point run by his team.

The initial coverage from the “Drama-addict” Facebook page indicated three fatalities, advising nearby residents to stay indoors.

The market was quickly sealed off by Bang Sue Police and other agencies as authorities searched for the shooter, who was later confirmed to have taken his own life.

The Erawan Centre later confirmed six fatalities, including the gunman, with two other women reported to be injured.

Early investigations revealed the gunman had been previously employed as a security guard at the same market.

Authorities suspect the attack was personal, stemming from a past conflict with a market vendor and a fellow security guard, with revenge believed to be the motive. – July 28, 2025
