KUALA LUMPUR – The government will introduce a capped quota for eligible individuals under the upcoming RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation, with higher allocations for drivers who depend on fuel for their livelihoods.
Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan told Parliament’s special chambers today that the quota system is being finalised, with a clear distinction between ordinary motorists and those in the gig economy such as p-hailing and e-hailing drivers.
“We will have a quota. We must have a quota. We do not want someone to pump fuel for other people. Ordinary users will have a set quota, but for p-hailing and e-hailing drivers, the quota will be higher because this is their primary task,” he said.
Amir Hamzah said details of the rationalised subsidy programme would be completed by the end of September, with criteria and implementation methods now in the final stage of refinement.
Factors such as income levels and whether vehicles are luxury or mass-market models will determine eligibility, he added.
He stressed the government’s objective was to ensure most Malaysians continue receiving support.
Tests have already been carried out using MyKad, e-wallets and petrol retailers’ apps to ensure the rollout is smooth and uncomplicated for the public. — August 25, 2025
