KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Plan 2026-2030 is set to be tabled in December this year.
The plan will focus on critical sectors and key areas, including governance, society, and industry, Bernama reported.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo explained that the plan, currently being developed by the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), is an essential component of Malaysia’s efforts to position itself as an AI-driven nation by 2030.
“Key areas we will focus on include governance, which will build on the Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics (AIGE) framework we launched last year.
Our goal is to ensure that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s vision of creating an AI-powered nation by 2030 is realised,” he told Bernama after his keynote speech at the United Kingdom-ASEAN AI Innovation Summit 2025.
The minister further highlighted that the National AI Action Plan will also address the challenges faced by the three main sectors: government, society, and industry.
He also shared that Malaysia is on track to become ASEAN’s data centre hub, with projections to host two-thirds of the region’s capacity by 2035, supported by a world-class 5G network. Strong infrastructure, he emphasised, must be coupled with trustworthy policies.
Gobind noted that Malaysia has already introduced a National Cloud Computing Policy this year to ensure a secure, sovereign, and sustainable cloud future. The country is also in the process of drafting a digital trust and data security strategy to strengthen its resilience.
“We are working on establishing a National Data Commission, which will oversee data governance in Malaysia, facilitate trusted data flows, and protect data rights.
Additionally, we are expanding the digitalisation of government data through a public sector digitalisation policy and establishing a National Data Bank—a trusted repository of high-quality datasets from various ministries and sectors,” he added. – October 6, 2025
