KUALA LUMPUR – The Aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has maintained an overall operational availability rate of 99.19% since its relaunch on July 1.
Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah reported that between July 2 and September 30, 19 operational disruptions were recorded. However, the service is now fully operational, achieving 100% functionality.
“Aside from technical issues, disruptions were also caused by human factors, including passengers attempting to forcibly open the Aerotrain doors,” he said during a question-and-answer session in Parliament today.
Hasbi further explained that improvements are continuously being made, with technical officers stationed on trains to resolve any issues promptly.
“The project is currently in its two-year defect liability period,” he added. “At this stage, the mechanical systems and signalling are undergoing initial adjustments to ensure full operational stability.”
As of October 8, the Aerotrain service has transported 5.33 million passengers, covering a total distance of 39,942 kilometres.
Responding to a follow-up question from Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) regarding compensation for the disruptions, Hasbi stated that the service provider could face penalties of up to RM190,000 per month for failing to meet operational standards.
“The operator must ensure the availability of trains at 100% for one train and 99.6% for two trains in operation. The tolerance levels are very strict,” he explained.
He assured that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) remains committed to ongoing improvements, monitoring operations to ensure they meet optimal performance standards. – October 13, 2025
