21 Malaysians die waiting each day — can unity save lives?

Wira Transplant Malaysia urges public to bridge divides through organ donation, unveiling a social takaful plan to turn compassion into the nation’s strongest act of solidarity

KUALA LUMPUR – In a country where diversity is often viewed through the lens of difference, the act of organ donation offers a rare and powerful story of unity — Malaysians saving Malaysians, across race and faith.

That was the message from actuary Ravinder Singh, a member of the Wira Transplant Malaysia Consortium, who recently made a stirring appeal in Parliament to see organ donation not just as a medical act, but as a moral and national one.

He highlighted that behind the grim statistics of transplant waiting lists lies a powerful, unifying truth.

“There is no better unity story in Malaysia than Malaysians giving life to each other across race and religion,” he said.

Ravinder, who is pioneering a social takaful initiative to boost organ pledges, explained that the transplant community consistently reports that donors and recipients often come from different ethnic backgrounds.

This, he argued, is a testament to a shared humanity that transcends societal divides and a narrative that needs to be championed.

The urgency of this message is underscored by the life-or-death reality for thousands.

Statistics presented by the consortium revealed a tragic picture: 50% of dialysis patients will not survive beyond five years, and an estimated 21 Malaysians on transplant waiting lists die every single day.

“Not because they are untreatable, but because there are not enough organ pledgers,” Ravinder stated, describing the life of a dialysis patient as a “life sentence, not a treatment.”

To change this, he has designed a social takaful scheme to encourage more Malaysians to pledge their organs.

The plan would provide free insurance coverage to pledgers, offering financial protection for their families at no cost to them.

The initiative aims to create a powerful new social contract.

“The people who save lives should not leave their own families unprotected,” Ravinder explained.

By providing this assurance, he believes families will be more likely to honour a loved one’s wish to donate, thereby saving more lives and reinforcing a virtuous cycle of giving that embodies the true spirit of Malaysian unity. – November 5, 2025
