GEORGE TOWN – The Penang police have made one of their biggest narcotics seizures this year with the confiscation of 247.7 kilograms of ganja flowers worth an estimated RM8.67 million on the underground market.

The haul followed the swift arrests of eight suspects, including a foreign man and a woman during a raid at a house in Bukit Mertajam.

State police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said officers acted on a tip-off before moving in on the suspects, who were seen loitering near a village-style house.

“Upon entering the premises, our team discovered 17 pieces of luggage filled with packages of ganja. The total weight of the seized drugs came to 247.7 kilograms,” he told reporters today.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the group was part of a drug distribution syndicate active since last month.

Azizee said the seized drugs could have supplied up to 500,000 addicts or recreational users. Four of the eight suspects also have previous criminal records.

Police also confiscated two vehicles, including a Honda Civic and a Toyota Estima, which are believed to have been used to transport the drugs.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.

“Our success stems from continuous investigation and intelligence work by the police force,” Azizee said, adding that drug trafficking remains a serious offence.

He urged anyone with information on drug-related activities to contact the state narcotics division at 012-2087 222. – November 10, 2025
