KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should remove Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek in the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle due to her weak performance in handling education issues, said MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president said this during his speech at the MCA General Assembly, emphasizing that this view is also shared by the majority of grassroots citizens, regardless of race or background.
“The current minister is not competent and should not remain in the Ministry of Education.
“This is the general view of the majority of grassroots citizens, regardless of race or background.
“We need someone more stable, far-sighted, visionary, and bold enough to carry out reforms to lead this crucial ministry that determines the country’s future.
“We hope the Prime Minister truly listens to the voice of the people — the power is in your hands. Please act,” he said.
He was commenting on speculation regarding a possible Cabinet reshuffle by the Prime Minister.
According to Wee, the Education Ministry has created “unprecedented” obstacles for Chinese primary school projects, and dissatisfaction with the current minister is widespread, The Star reported.
He referred to the SJKC Kuek Ho Yao project in Johor, part of the Chinese primary school package approved by Barisan Nasional on October 26, 2017, which has faced long delays and almost no progress since Pakatan Harapan (PH) took over the administration.
He said the school initially faced attempts to relocate the site, followed by the developer’s refusal to build it.
MCA then worked with the state government to reclaim the original land and complete the necessary procedures at the state exco level, he added.
“Over the past few years, I have asked the current Education Minister about this issue eight times in Parliament, but never once received an answer.
“Instead, it even resulted in the minister slamming the table in anger,” he said.
In his speech, Wee also said MCA is prepared to leave Barisan Nasional (BN) if the coalition continues to support policies that burden the people and weaken its position.
He said BN, which also comprises Umno, MIC, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), risks being “dragged down” by unpopular federal government policies.
He also questioned how BN leaders can defend policies that were neither referred to the coalition nor aligned with its spirit and principles.
“Confidence in political parties is fragile, and BN’s relevance depends on its ability to demonstrate independence, accountability, and a willingness to speak up on important issues.
“If the unity government continues with policies that burden the people, and BN continues to support them without question, then MCA must be prepared to act in the best interests of the people,” he said.
Wee said MCA’s grassroots are increasingly frustrated by having to explain or defend federal policies that the party does not endorse.
“MCA is prepared to go its own way if BN continues to support policies and political arrangements that harm the people and weaken the coalition,” he said.
He added that loyalty to BN “cannot come at the expense of the people.” – December 7, 2025
