KUALA LUMPUR – Housing developers are being encouraged to reconsider parking provisions in new developments located near public transport hubs.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that the proposal had been submitted to the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), emphasising that the current standard of one or two parking bays per residential unit is contributing to rising property prices.
“For projects close to public transport stations like the LRT or MRT, parking requirements could be reduced to encourage residents to use public transport,” he said during a press conference held after the inauguration of the new Multiplex Land Sdn Bhd office and the pre-launch of Residensi Alamanda Heights.
Loke noted that several transit-oriented development (TOD) projects in Kuala Lumpur have already been granted permission to apply for parking requirement exemptions from local authorities.
Addressing concerns that many households today own multiple vehicles, Loke clarified that the proposal applies exclusively to new developments and is aimed primarily at young residents living near urban rail networks.
“If they live near public transport stations, the necessity of owning a car may be reduced. This can also help lower their living expenses,” he added.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage a long-term shift towards a lifestyle that relies more on public transportation. – December 7, 2025
