KUALA LUMPUR – Titiwangsa MP and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has pressed the developer of the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment project to deliver new residential units within the promised timeframe.
Johari said some residents had already vacated their homes but claimed they had yet to receive the compensation due.
“They expect to receive houses as compensation, but when the houses are not completed, problems arise,” he told reporters after launching Citrawarna Kampong Bharu 2025 in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of Kampong Bharu today.
He noted that residents had signed agreements with one company, but part of its interest was later sold to another developer, raising questions of accountability.
“That is also among the issues being examined – what happens if the project is not completed, and who should be held responsible, whether the original company or the new developer, as stipulated in the agreement signed eight years ago,” he said.
Johari added he had asked the Kuala Lumpur mayor to prioritise two residential blocks so traditional landowners could return to their original areas quickly.
The redevelopment project began on Nov 30 and is slated for completion within four years.
Previously, former Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the new units would range from 900 to 1,200 square feet, each with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, alongside incentives such as free maintenance for the first year and a 70 per cent discount for the next nine years.
Earlier, Johari said Citrawarna Kampong Bharu 2025, organised with OMNI Holding, Kampong Bharu Corporation, the Federal Territories Department and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, will be made an annual event to showcase Kampong Bharu’s heritage.
The second edition featured cultural performances, traditional food sales, community activities and the Kampong Bharu Rona Run, which drew 482 participants. – December 21, 2025
