KUALA LUMPUR – Umno Puchong has severed all forms of political cooperation with its Pakatan Harapan (PH) counterpart at the division level, effective immediately.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Umno Puchong Secretary Mohamad Yusof Mohamed Yasin said the decision was taken after Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin failed to apologise for and retract her “uncivil, insensitive, and immature” social media remark involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently.
Mohamad Yusof said moving forward, Umno Puchong will not hold joint meetings, coordinate or organise political activities, community programmes, or campaigns with its PH counterpart in the parliamentary constituency, as well as the Seri Serdang and Seri Kembangan state constituencies.
“(Umno Puchong will also not) collaborate in election strategies, planning or operations with Pakatan Harapan Puchong under any circumstances.
“This decision is limited to only the Puchong parliamentary constituency, and the Seri Serdang and Seri Kembangan state constituencies, and does not automatically extend to the (Selangor) state or national levels,” Mohamad Yusof stressed.
Elaborating, Mohamad Yusof also said that Umno Puchong will no longer be bound by any unofficial political understandings (gentlemen’s agreements), no longer be responsible for safeguarding or defending the political interests of its PH counterpart, and be free to take its own stance on all local issues.
Sends a clear message
The severing of ties signals Umno Puchong’s protest and sends a clear message that it rejects the actions and statements of the constituency’s PH leaders, after feeling that the party’s dignity, the principles of the Federal Constitution, and respect for the Malay Rulers have been challenged and disrespected, said Mohamad Yusof.
He clarified that the protest, however, does not mean that Umno is leaving the unity government at the state or national level.
“It represents a local political stance, as long as it does not conflict with the decisions of the Umno Supreme Council or Barisan Nasional leadership at the national level,” he said, adding that henceforth, Umno Puchong will operate independently at the parliamentary and state constituency levels.
Mohamad Yusof said that support for any PH Puchong candidate in any by-election or general election will also be conditional, or withheld entirely.
The controversy arose from Yeo’s Facebook post linking to a news article titled “No house arrest for Najib”, which was shared just hours after the High Court ruled that the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s addendum on Najib’s house arrest was invalid, as it had not been deliberated during the Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting.
In the post, the DAP national publicity secretary described the ruling as “another reason to celebrate at year’s end”.
The comment garnered backlash widespread from Umno leaders – fuelling growing speculation that the party might withdraw its support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. – December 27, 2025
