KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his gratitude for the strengthened unity within the government, highlighting its sincerity and cohesion in contrast to the recent political turmoil in the opposition, particularly in Perlis.
Speaking at a press conference in Putrajaya, Anwar noted that the unity government operates with genuine collaboration, free from any elements of sabotage or betrayal, unlike the situation unfolding among opposition parties.
“I am grateful that the unity government’s partnership is stronger, more sincere, and free from any attempts at sabotage or betrayal, unlike what has happened among other colleagues in the opposition,” he said.
Anwar’s comments come amidst political unrest in Perlis, where tensions within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition led to the resignation of the state’s Menteri Besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli.
The crisis escalated when several PN assemblymen reportedly met with the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, to express their loss of confidence in Shukri’s leadership.
Following these developments, the President of PAS, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, announced the immediate suspension of three PN assemblymen—Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji)—under Article 76 and Article 15A(1)(b) of the PAS Constitution (Amendment 2025).
As a result, the Perlis State Legislative Assembly has requested the Election Commission (SPR) to hold by-elections for the three affected constituencies, creating a vacancy that has shaken the state government’s majority.
These events coincide with a broader political shift, with several prominent figures within PN stepping down, including Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, whose resignation as the national PN chairman will take effect on January 1, 2026.
Other leaders who have also resigned include Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali as the PN secretary-general, Selangor Chief Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, and Perak and Negeri Sembilan chairmen Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker. – December 30, 2025
