KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 104 Umno divisions have submitted motions calling for a full royal pardon for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, according to party secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
The motions are part of 662 proposals received by the party ahead of its upcoming general assembly, with 175 out of 191 divisions tabling motions following their divisional meetings last year.
Asyraf Wajdi said the proposals covered a wide range of issues, including political, religious, educational and economic matters, but calls for clemency for Najib stood out as one of the most prominent themes.
“Among the most widely submitted motions were those seeking justice and a full pardon for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” he told reporters at a press conference today, according to the New Straits Times (NST).
He stressed that the motions were not seeking Najib’s immediate release or acquittal, but were aimed at appealing for royal clemency.
“The divisions understand that the authority to grant a pardon does not lie with the government, but rests solely with His Majesty the King,” he said.
Najib is currently serving a reduced prison term after the Pardons Board in 2024 halved his original 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
The former prime minister was first jailed in August 2022 following his conviction in the SRC International case, the first 1MDB-linked prosecution to reach a final judgment. – January 9, 2026
