KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia and India have spotlighted major strides in renewable energy and semiconductors as the two nations deepen economic cooperation, with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Gentari recognised for their growing role in India’s green hydrogen and solar energy landscape.

In a joint statement today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the vast potential for collaboration in large‑scale solar initiatives, leveraging Malaysia’s expertise to accelerate clean energy solutions and advance mutual net‑zero ambitions.

“Malaysia appreciates India’s initiative in establishing the International Solar Alliance (ISA),” the statement said.

Both leaders also highlighted the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry to the global technology economy, stressing the need to strengthen bilateral synergy in innovation, workforce development and supply chain stability.

“They emphasised the importance of deepening cooperation to strengthen the semiconductor value chain focusing on technological innovation, workforce development, and supply chain stability to build a resilient and competitive ecosystem,” the statement added.

Ongoing initiatives include partnerships between IIT‑Madras Global and Malaysia’s Advanced Semiconductor Academy, as well as collaboration between the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) and the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSI).

The statement further applauded the formalisation of the Malaysia–India Digital Council (MIDC), envisioned as a key platform to drive digital cooperation in fintech, e‑governance, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure and emerging technologies.

Anwar and Modi said MIDC will serve as a strategic mechanism to strengthen bilateral digital engagement and support both nations’ digital transformation agendas.

The leaders also welcomed collaboration between NPCI International Limited (NIPL) and PayNet Malaysia to establish bilateral payment linkages.

“They noted that this integration will significantly enhance the ease of doing business and provide seamless, low‑cost remittance and payment solutions for tourists, students, and small businesses, thereby enabling closer economic and people‑to‑people connectivity between Malaysia and India,” the statement said. – February 8, 2026
