Sultan of Selangor proposes pork imports to replace local farming plans

The ruler cites pollution risks and land constraints, proposing pork imports as a solution

KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has firmly opposed pig farming in any district within the state, citing environmental risks, limited land, and concerns over public harmony.

In a statement issued by the Selangor Royal Office today, His Majesty expressed support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent call to halt a large-scale pig farming project in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor.

The Royal Office highlighted concerns regarding the environmental impact of pig farming, stating: “This is because pig farming can cause air pollution through unpleasant odours and contaminate river water sources due to the release of pig manure and sewage.”

His Majesty also pointed to the potential social challenges of the proposed project, noting that the Bukit Tagar area is predominantly inhabited by the Malay community, including Felda settlers. He warned that such a project would likely meet strong objections from local residents.

The Sultan further raised concerns about the potential pollution of water sources that supply Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya. “In addition, it can cause pollution to water catchment areas and rivers that supply clean water sources to residents in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya,” he added.

While acknowledging that modern farming methods could reduce pollution, the Sultan noted that these methods require substantial investment and still do not guarantee protection against water contamination, particularly in sensitive catchment areas.

He also highlighted the issue of land availability in Selangor, stating that both large- and small-scale pig farming would be inappropriate due to the state’s high land values. He suggested that the land should be better utilised for development and community needs.

As a potential solution, the Sultan proposed that the government consider importing pork to meet the demand of non-Muslim communities, particularly the Chinese population in Selangor.

“With this method, it would not only resolve the long-standing pig farming issue but also allow the state government to optimise land use for other purposes such as development and settlement,” the statement said.

His Majesty concluded by stressing that the pig farming issue must be “stopped and finalised,” urging all parties to respect the decision and work together to preserve unity and harmony in the state. – February 10, 2026
