Investigation centres on claims of misuse of religious funds in property purchase

KUALA LUMPUR — Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mohamad Abdul Hamid arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in George Town this morning to assist in investigations into the alleged misuse of zakat funds for a land purchase.

According to Sinar Harian, a Proton X70 carrying the Penang PKR chief entered the state MACC compound at about 9.48am, after which he was seen heading into the building.

The probe by the anti-graft body follows claims that funds meant for Islamic charitable purposes were improperly used in a property transaction linked to the Penang Islamic Religious Council.

Mohamad, who also chairs the Penang Islamic Religious Council, has previously said he would cooperate fully with investigators and provide any documents required. He has maintained that the council acted in accordance with established procedures.

The investigation is understood to be carried out under Section 23 of the MACC Act, which relates to abuse of position for gratification.

The issue has drawn political pressure, with PAS urging the Batu Maung assemblyman to step aside pending the outcome of the probe.

MACC has yet to issue an official update on the status of the investigation. — March 2, 2026
