KUALA LUMPUR – Avocados Australia Limited (AAL) formalised two major agreements today, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Monash University Malaysia and a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the University of Wollongong (UOW) Malaysia.
The event, held at the Sheraton Petaling Jaya, was attended by notable figures, AAL chairman including Matthew Kleyn, Professor Datuk Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia, and Professor Dr Hiew Pang Leang, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of UOW Malaysia.
The signing ceremony was also witnessed by the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Ms Danielle Heinecke.
These agreements underscore the robust bilateral ties under the Australia-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and highlight a pivotal step in fostering industry-academia collaboration.
“We are deeply committed to advancing the agri-food sector, which is a key area of our investment strategy. Malaysia currently ranks second in our focus for investment into Southeast Asia, but we are eager to do more,” said High Commissioner Heinecke, emphasising the significance of Malaysia’s MADANI food security agenda.
She added a symbolic analogy to illustrate the strength of the relationship: “It’s about the depth of knowledge and trust, much like the avocado itself, where the true value lies beneath the surface. Our relationship is based on the substance of our cooperation.”
The growth of the avocado sector in Malaysia reflects the strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, with Australian avocado sales rising by 54 per cent year-on-year, despite challenges such as the import tax expected in mid-2025.
“It is essential that we invest not only in trade but also in knowledge exchange, nutrition education, and culinary expertise, all of which contribute to long-term market development,” noted Matthew Kleyn, Chairman of AAL. He further explained that AAL’s commitment to Malaysia extends beyond trade figures.
The MOU with Monash University Malaysia establishes a framework to integrate health and nutrition education, aligning academic research with agri-food insights to deliver evidence-based messages.
Meanwhile, the MOA with UOW Malaysia formalises the university’s involvement in the Australian Fruits Culinary Training Program.
Supported by Culinary Ambassador Audra Morrice, the programme aims to inspire emerging chefs to incorporate premium produce such as avocados and cherries into contemporary cuisine, while strengthening ties with Malaysia’s hospitality sector.
Together, these memorandums highlight AAL’s ongoing commitment to Malaysia, not only as a vital market but as a strategic regional partner. – March 4, 2026
