KUALA LUMPUR — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has questioned Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s authority to determine whether he can join Perikatan Nasional (PN).
The former Bersatu deputy president said Muhyiddin’s earlier remarks suggested that the Pagoh MP alone had the power to decide whether he could become a member of the opposition coalition.
“He said I cannot be a member of PN. Who is he to decide?” Hamzah said, according to Sinar Harian.
“I want to ask him — if I can become a member of PN, will he resign?
“If he says he will step down, I will try my best to become a PN member so that he can resign.”
Hamzah was speaking to reporters after the Moreh Perdana event and the launch of the Negeri Sembilan Gempur Rasuah campaign organised by Bersatu’s Port Dickson division last night.
Recently, Muhyiddin said he could not envision working with Hamzah in the near future as he no longer trusted him. He also said he would oppose any attempt by Hamzah or his new political platform to join PN, noting that admission to the coalition requires the consent of its component parties.
On March 3, Hamzah confirmed he was in discussions with Parti Keluarga Malaysia on the possibility of leading the party, including technical arrangements.
He also said he was surprised by the support he received from Bersatu leaders after his dismissal, claiming that 118 division chiefs had backed him. He added that more than 60 Bersatu divisions had since been dissolved, which he said reflected waning support for the party leadership.
“If I were the president, even if I were the party’s founder, if so many people are leaving, it shows the party no longer has the support of its division leaders,” he said. — March 7, 2026
