Govt eyes alternative transit routes, nearer markets to keep VM2026 on track

Tourism deputy sec-gen Chua says global uncertainty may favour Malaysia as travellers shift to closer, stable destinations

KUALA LUMPUR – The government is studying alternative transit routes and intensifying its focus on Asian markets to ensure Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) remains on track, as global travel patterns shift amid ongoing uncertainties.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general Chua Choon Hwa said global instability presents not only challenges but also opportunities, particularly as travellers increasingly favour nearer and more stable destinations.

He noted that such behavioural shifts could work in Malaysia’s favour as it pushes towards its VM2026 targets.

“Sometimes, when distant destinations are unstable, tourists will look for closer options. This could be an opportunity for Malaysia if the strategies implemented are appropriate,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

Chua said tourism strategies are being coordinated to address current disruptions, including issues affecting key transit routes.

He pointed to disruptions in Middle East flight transit routes, which have traditionally served as a major corridor for long-haul travellers heading to Asia, as one of the main challenges under assessment.

“Transit in the Middle East is currently somewhat disrupted, so we are looking at ways to overcome the situation, including using certain transit airports to avoid affected areas,” he said.

He added that the government is evaluating alternative transit options while strengthening engagement with Asian markets, which are less affected by current conflicts, to ensure a steady flow of tourists into Malaysia.

“We are exploring alternative transit routes to ensure tourists can continue to reach Malaysia conveniently.

“We are also looking at new markets in Asia to expand our reach and attract more visitors,” he said.

Chua stressed that any strategic adjustments will be guided by data to keep VM2026 targets both relevant and achievable.

“Although we see certain disruptions, we are still going all out, not only to ensure that the set target can be achieved, but also striving for better performance if conditions allow,” he said.

The government has set a target of 47 million international tourist arrivals and RM329 billion in tourism revenue in conjunction with VM2026. – March 23, 2026
