KUALA LUMPUR – The Health Ministry (MOH) has called on all government and private agencies to enforce rigorous safety measures after 15 confirmed heat-related illnesses and one fatality were reported across the country.
Since January 1, the ministry has recorded 11 cases of heat exhaustion, one instance of heat cramps, and three cases of heatstroke, with 14 patients now fully recovered.
The sole fatality involved a child who succumbed to heatstroke after being left in a vehicle.
“MOH urges agencies, including educational institutions and care centers, to adopt recommended preventive steps to avoid further incidents of heat-related illnesses,” the ministry said in a statement.
The advisory comes as the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) placed several districts in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, and Perlis under Level 1 (Alert) warnings. Three areas in Kedah—Pokok Sena, Pendang, and Baling—have escalated to Level 2 (Heatwave), with temperatures reaching 40°C for three consecutive days.
The ministry emphasised that continuous monitoring is underway to assess the health impact of the extreme weather.
“Symptoms can range from mild headaches and nausea to severe dehydration, confusion and coma,” MOH warned.
Children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses or outdoor occupations are particularly vulnerable to life-threatening heatstroke.
The ministry advised the public to avoid outdoor activities between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, maintain a daily intake of at least eight glasses of water, and steer clear of sugary or caffeinated drinks that hinder hydration.
MOH also issued a stern reminder to parents and guardians never to leave children unattended in closed vehicles, even for brief periods.
Additional recommendations include wearing light, loose clothing, bathing frequently to cool the body, and using fans or air conditioning. Anyone experiencing symptoms is urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.
